"My friend passed away, and I got the heart and the angel wings for him, and I got the eight ball because I love playing pool. The guy acted like my dad when my dad wasn't around, and treated me well. He took me to a a carnival once and I wasn't allowed to go on the Ferris wheel, and my mom didn't want me to go on because I was bad, so he took me on anyway (laughs). So, I had fun."

"I was homeless in Bethlehem for three months. The landlord kicked me out because I couldn't pay rent. I had surgery on my foot and had to stay out of work for five months, and I didn't have money so they kicked me out. Then I got bit by a spider. They sent me to St. Luke's hospital. After that, a van came for me, took me to a home, and I was there for six months. Now, I have two jobs, an apartment and a lot of friends. I'm okay now." Stephen Wilson Marketing, Easton Hospital "We've gotta get people talking about hunger and I think we did this past week to show the film 'A Place at the Table,' and if we can use tactics like that, the film, we've got to get people to see it so that we have more minds, more bodies, more folks who are engaged in the issue to solve it locally. That's my hope: 'Let's get people to see things that inspire them to take action,' and that film does it." "What would you say to people who think that hunger doesn't exist here?" "It's a hidden issue. It's like the film even said: 'When people think about folks who are hungry, they have a picture in their mind that's not accurate to what hunger really looks like.' So they need to begin to see what hunger is and how hidden it is in our culture. Just go to an elementary school and you'll be able to pick out the kids who have and haven't eaten in the morning, just by behavior and their ability to concentrate. So, it's just not what folks necessarily think. 'Cause it's here. It's here in a big way. "I'm a vegan because animal abuse is wrong and eating meat is destroying the planet and I just think it's the most ethical way to live." "What was your epiphany in becoming a vegan? When did that happen?" "I watched a video called 'Meet Your Meat' on the internet, this is about ten years ago; I'd been vegetarian for a little bit before that, and that was really when I made the choice. It just kinda fell into place then and there." 'What can we do to improve relations between police and citizens in the community?" "That's the whole idea of good police work, is working with the community because they see things we don't see. So when the community helps out and they come forward and they give us information and they talk to us, that's probably the best way of policing." "What about people who are reticent to get involved? What would you tell them?" "Don't be afraid to come forward and speak up. It's your community and you and your neighbors gotta work together and come forward. Don't be afraid." Centre Square "I've been a volunteer firefighter for about fifteen years. My great uncle was chief of a fire department in North Jersey in Essex Fells and because of him I became a fireman right before 9/11 happened, actually. So I wasn't motivated by 9/11 like most people were to join a volunteer service, and right before I got out of the academy all the guys from my academy were called to New York City the same day the Towers fell. I spent 21 days there." |
