"What are you going for at Lafayette?" "Civil engineering. I grew up in the Bay Area and I was extremely fascinated by the Bay Bridge 'cause it had so many things about it when it was brand new: when it was made, it was the longest suspension bridge; it was the longest cantilevered truss bridge. The Yerba Buena tunnel was the biggest tunnel excavated to date and that was something that always fascinated me. Also, both my parents worked for USAID, which is an aid branch of the government, and I lived overseas for awhile. And seeing the good that civil engineering can do in third world countries and developing countries was another reason I wanted to go into civil engineering."
